Anxiety

For as long as I can remember I have had feelings of anxiety. The picture below reminds me that despite missing 72 days of first period my senior year (anxiety) my creative writing teacher officially gave me a passing grade on this day so I could graduate high school. What triggers anxiety can be different for everyone. Common causes are: burying emotions, saying yes to everyone, lacking boundaries or filling every second of every day without rest. Long term anxiety or stress can affect your immune system, digestive system and metabolism. A few of the unhealthy coping mechanisms I developed to curb feelings of anxiety included: emotional eating, drinking alcohol too often among other things. I also learned some healthy ways to help manage anxiety such as deep breathing, yoga and nature therapy including gardening. Although these were very helpful they still only gave me temporary relief. They say anxiety holds your body’s wisdom and it’s presence is a message of an imbalance or calling to heal. The subconscious only stays silent for so long. Yet, when you are in an anxious state most of the day it often consumes all of your energy so doing the work of uncovering underlying reasons for anxiety is often too much to physically, mentally and emotionally handle.

For me, it wasn’t until I targeted my gut health did I have a significant breakthrough in my overall anxiety levels where I could wake up for the first time ever without feelings of overwhelm. In fact I now have an enhanced stress resiliency and inner calm that I have never felt my entire life! Since 90% of neurotransmitters are made in the gut it is important to target the health of this part of the body. Focusing on the gut-brain connection is the forefront of science is the most direct approach to improve our mental wellness. When the weight of constant overwhelm, anxiety and stress was lifted I was able to shift my emotional energy towards healing underlying causes of anxiety and developing tools to reduce anxiety even further. For the first time ever I am setting boundaries even at the risk of disappointing others. I have been going deep into exploring subconscious programming and coping mechanisms that are not serving me or helping me move towards the highest version of myself. I am looking forward to sharing all the details in future posts so I can help others on their mental wellness journey as well. Although dealing with anxiety can be very stressful it can also be seen as a gift that cracks us open and forces us to shed conditioning so we can learn how to truly take care of ourselves.
